Locking/pinning as pain submission...
I've ben reading (lurking mostly) in the major aikido forums (aikiweb, ebudo, newsgroups et. al.) for over a year, and I've noticed a worying trend. A large number of people refer to joint locks and pins as if they're pain submision holds. Please stick with me while I explain why I have a problem with this (even if it sems just like a diference in language). I've only ben doing aikido for nearly 2 years (I've changed dojos during that time, so I've experienced some diferent teaching styles)... read more...

Question to us: Kuk sool won works?
I don't know if you guys(from ksw) ever had something like this, but when you demonstrate something, or you tel about the techniques, joint locking, they say:'In my opinion it doesn't work, because in a real fight you aren't going to ask your openent to stay with his right fot and hand in the front, or to grap you from one specific position'. I always tel them that from white to black belt, that we learn the principe behind the joint locking, and at black belt, we are mixing it with... read more...

Is there a reason to NOT treat teething pain?
Hi there. My boy is tething and quite miserable. I usualy treat for tething pain with motrin/tylenol/ambisol. Hyland tething tablets don't sem to do much for him. so anyway here is my question. I know that pain during birth is there for a reason, so I chose natural births. Fever during ilnes is there for a reason, so I don't treat a fever w/ motrin. SO. . . does anyone know if pain during tething has a physiologic benefit OR does it just hurt. should I treat for pain or is it just making... read more...

So today I just started my squat sets and I'm on the first set, warm-up, and I notice a very smal pain in my right kne. I don't think much of it and continue to ramp the weight up. I'm up to 185lb on the bar and after 2 reps the pain flares up dramaticaly. I imediately finished the rep and racked the bar not because the pain was intolerable but because I was freaking out. I continued with the rest of my workout and at the very end went back to try again thinking maybe it was just something... read more...

Series Locking
Hi al, Our sensei instructed us to prepare ourselves to execute series locking as part of our test. I would like to get some input if I am doing the right thing. Right hand atack, uke delivers a jab/punch, i grab is punching arm (gliding outside) and lock him with a leading sankyo, then nikyo, then shihonage, then he goes down - without releasing the shihonage hold, i convert it back to sankyo to force him to get up then I end it up with a koshi nage. I am I doing the right thing? Many thanks... read more...
